Thinking of Freelance Writing?

12 Feb

As this is primarily a blog for, but not necessarily excluded to, young writers, I think there are a large number of our blog readers out there who are interested in pursuing a career in writing.  I think that nearly any career requires writing, and, as I’ve stated before, you cannot succeed in any career unless you write well.

But there are some who really want to focus solely on writing, and so perhaps freelance writing is the best way to get your start.  Plus, freelance writing has the added bonus of being able to work from home, which is really everyone’s dream.  My dad works from home and his daily commute consists of walking down the stairs to get sausages in the morning.  That’s much better than my daily commute of having to fight off those drivers from Virginia who can’t drive whatsoever (seriously, Virginian drivers are terrible).

In any case, working for yourself, and this applies to homework as well, requires some amount of inner discipline.  To help you along, Anna Goldsmith has five tips for you over at Copyblogger:

  1. Create a division between work and home
  2. Take off the pajamas
  3. Get to work on time
  4. Don’t watch TV in the middle of the day
  5. But do go out to lunch

Personally, I don’t think anyone should have any trouble adhering to number 4.  The worse thing about being home on a weekday is that there is never anything on TV.  At least when I was eight, Fox played reruns of I Love Lucy.  Now it’s just the lousy news.

In any case, click here to read the whole thing.

And er… maybe disconnect the internet, too, while you’re at it. Not that I know from experience, or anything. Worse than TV, almost.

    Good tips!
