NaNo Survival Kit

Newsreader: Good evening. This is the 6 o’clock news at the Novelists’ News Network studio.

Novelists around the world are preparing for ‘Thirty Days and Nights of literary abandon’ according to the organisers of National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo: a thirty day challenge to write a 50,000 word novel. In response to this, the government has announced that a survival kit for all participants and nonparticipants will be issued on the first of November to coincide with the start of NaNoWriMo.

Over to our correspondent Blues, who is in the main city square and has managed to obtain a few kits.

Reporter (Holding a sky blue box): Yes, I’m here in the city square at the moment and – this is a Novelists’ News Network exclusive, might I add – we’ve managed to obtain the government-issued survival kits for the common month. (Opens box) As you can see, amongst other things, the content of the kit for NaNo participants are:

– A soundtrack (this is believed to aid writing)

– A large collection of blue or black pens

– Lined paper

– A free word processor CD

– Several chocolate bars, for consumption during writing.

In addition to all this, there are also links to several websites aimed to help novelists during this challenging time. Among these, yarny.me – a free cloud based word processor – and writeordie.com for during word wars–

Newsreader: You mention ‘word wars’. Could you explain what they are?

Reporter: Word wars are mini challenges between a group of people to write as much as you can in a set amount of time – this is usually around 15 minutes long. These are usually arranged in the YWS Chat. (Picks up and opens grey box) This is the non-participants’ survival kit – these will be issued to mostly the friends and family of participating. Unfortunately, we do not have time to go through it due to preparations for the event, but from what I can see is that it mainly is comprised of handkerchiefs  as understandably, family and friends will want to mourn for the loss of their loved one during the course of the month.

This is your intrepid reporter at the Novelists’ News Network. Back to the studio.

Newsreader: If you’re participating in NaNoWrimo, feel free to comment below and tell us what you think should be added to the survival kit for next you. Thank you and good night.

    Coffee, yes, lot’s of coffee.

Writeordie is no longer free. You might be able to get a trial version or the web version, but last I checked they were charging $6 for the app. (Very, very reasonable, if you ask me.)

Superheronation.com is my all time favorite writer’s website. They offer concise, great advice on just about anything a writer could ask.
For a more feminine mindset, writingwhilethericeboils is also a great site.

And of course, the best writer’s site out there is YWS.

I think the survival kit would need a very small does of distraction. Not much, but just enough that when you get writer’s block you can take a step back and let your subconscious mind do it’s work.
